This print depicts the moment when St. John was executed by being cooked in a vat of hot oil, as he prays for his salvation. In this image, St. John is the victim the emperor Domition who ordered the execution is the culprit of this horrific act. Naturally, it is Domition who is depicted wearing a loosely twisted turban and a fur-lined garment, instantly insinuating the Orient . Another man stands behind him, also wearing a large turban. Durer used Oriental clothing to represent the villains in this story, revealing the European vilification of the Orient.
