Drawing of figures copied from Gentile Bellini's Corpus Christi Procession on the Piazza San Marco
Description
Dürer's drawing was based off Gentile Bellini's work, meaning Dürer must have seen Gentile's drawing in Bellini's studio in Venice. Dürer did travel to Venice, and thus it is not unreasonable to assume he might have interacted with Gentile's workshop and seem the artist's preparatory drawings. Gentile finished his work in 1496, and it would have beed a work in progress when Dürer was in Venice. Dürer clearly took a keen interest in these particular figures, with their globular turbans, wiry mustaches, and tent-like clothing. Dürer paid careful attention to details in the clothing, such as how the belts are twisted pieces of fabric, the buttons are always in pairs, and the sleeves of the garments billow with such volume.
