Description

Salvator Rosa's anonymous warrior is a Baroque drawing of an Oriental figure, whose ethnicity is indicated by his attire alone. The loosely wound toga asserts a primitive quality of the man, who apparently is not interested in dressing himself in Western clothing. His sandals suggest he hails from a warmer location than Western Europe as well. Rosa topped the figure with a turban, inserting the Orient into the drawing via the iconography of Oriental headdress.
