Title
Man in a turban, depicted in bust length format from behind in three-quarters view
Subject
Print
Description
This etching was created by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (the son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo) in the late 18th century, firmly rooted in earlier Baroque examples (such as Catiglione's). Like Castiglione's figures, this man wear a loose turban and a large cloaked garment. However, he turns away from the audience; he becomes impossible for the viewer to recognize as an identifiable man, as his turban becomes the only element of the etching that indicates who he is. Tiepolo's sole interest in the man's attire reveals his sole focus on the iconography of the Orient.
